Construction of the 60,000 seater stadium began in March 2024 after a groundbreaking ceremony presided over by President William Ruto

The Talanta Sports City Stadium continues to make headlines with the latest updates indicating that the facility will have a four-star hotel and a shopping mall.

Talanta Stadium is a Government of Kenya (GoK) flagship project aimed at constructing an ultramodern stadium to boost the country's sporting economy.

The construction of stadium is inspired by the fact that Kenya is set to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

Construction of the 60,000 seater stadium began in March 2024 after a groundbreaking ceremony presided over by President William Ruto.

According to latest reports, the facility is set to have a 300-room four-star hotel as one of the subsidiary amenities to increase its value and position it as a premier destination for sporting activities.

Apart from the hotel, the facility will also have a shopping mall that will occupy a minimum of 30,000 square meters of Gross Lettable Area (GLA) - the total floor space of a commercial property available for rent by tenants.

The land that will host both the mall and the hotel will be provided by the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), who also advertised for the tenders where the developer will receive a 40-year special-use licence.

“The special use licence shall confer on the successful bidder an exclusive right to occupy and utilise the specified parcel of KFS for the purposes of developing, financing, constructing and operating the 4-star hotel and shopping mall,” read part of the tender notice by KFS.

The hotel is expected to feature a variety of room standards including standard, deluxe, junior suites, executive suites as well as family suites with KFS explaining its significance.

“It is envisioned that the hotel and the shopping mall will catalyse new demand for Talanta Sports City by offering modern hospitality services, enabling larger events and tournaments, and stimulating further investment within the same land parcel,” KFS stated.

“The hotel will provide a unique platform for athletes, officials, spectators, corporate guests, and tourists to access high-quality hospitality services directly within Nairobi’s premier sports destination,” added the statement.

With regards to construction works at the stadium, the installation of the roofing steel structure is almost complete, with the testing and verification of the works being the only remaining aspect of it.

The four corners of the facility, which are pending, have been done as per aerial photos as shared by the Principal Secretary in the State Department of Interior and Coordination of National Government Dr. Raymond Omollo on his Facebook page.

The roof will be tested and configured with the help of the computerized hydraulic tension cable - the ultramodern engineering technology that was used to lift the floor and from which the roof will be held.

The technology, which has been used in only four other stadiums in the globe with none of them in Africa, is one of the peculiar characteristics of the Ngong’ Road-based facility.

The technology involves the use of tension as opposed to compression to stabilize the roof with the roofing membrane sitting on the tension cable-net system.

The sophisticated technology combines powerful hydraulic jacks with a network of high-stength steel cables that are fitted as the cable is installed and lifted in phases.

To ensure safety and accuracy in roofing, the computer control system synchronizes the jacks while monitoring the tension cables.

This mode ensured that human interaction in the roofing process at Talanta was reduced and the majority of works done on the ground to reduce the risks that come with work at height thereby setting standards in safety practice.

In yet another new development, works on the playing surface have begun at the facility with the contractor assuring that the playing surface will be prepared to meet international standards.

Kenya will be keen to get it right once and for all with the playing surface after being forced by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to redo the Kasarani Stadium surface for failing to meet the minimum requirements.

The stadium which is now 70% complete, according to latest reports, is expected to be ready by March 2026.

External works were set to be complete by 31 December but that timeline will seemingly not be met as there are various works including the installation of Kenyan emblems on the curtain wall still ongoing.
